Rottnest Island’s calmest bays

Rottnest has beaches on all sides of the island, making it easy to find a sheltered bay for swimming. Use the wind direction to choose the quietest water today.

Why wind matters here

The island is exposed to open ocean on multiple sides, so the wind can quickly change the feel of the water. Picking the leeward side keeps conditions calm and clear.

Today’s recommendation logic

  • • Light wind (0–10 kt): choose any bay with easy access.
  • • Moderate wind (10–18 kt): stick to bays on the sheltered side of the island.
  • • Strong wind (18+ kt): pick the most enclosed coves near the settlement.

Best picks when wind is onshore

On a southwest sea breeze, the north and northeast bays like The Basin, Longreach Bay, and Geordie Bay are usually the calmest. If the wind flips easterly, try Little Salmon Bay or Parakeet Bay on the opposite side.
